Obituary of William J.D. Smith

William J.D. Smith "Smitty" age 50, of Somers Point, passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2020 after a short hospital stay. Bill was born December 5, 1969 in Fairfax, VA. He was an area resident of Somers Point since 1973. Around age 9, Bill spent a lot of time at Tree House Farm in Vineland where his mother worked as a riding instructor. Bill took riding lessons, had several ponies that he cared for and showed at local horse shows where he won ribbons in the pony division. He attended O.C. High School as a freshman then transferred to Absegami High School. After graduation, he attended Pennco Technical Institute where he became a certified mechanic. He was a very skilled Stucco and DriVit mechanic. Bill worked at Pep Boys in Northfield for several years before he transferred to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and lived with his dad for a while. He was very gifted technically and by the time he was 3 years old he could take almost anything apart and put it back together. Bill's favorite hobbies were fishing and crabbing. He was most at peace when he was fishing. One of the things he looked most forward to in the summer was going to the AC Air Show at the Hilton Beach with his family and a friend or two. He also loved animals. He especially enjoyed being with family and friends at Holiday meals and gatherings. Bill loved spending time with his daughter Sarah, affectionately known to him when she was younger as "Sarah Bear", and his two grandchildren, Gianna & Jojo. He has had many friends over the years that he loved spending time with, particularly his lifelong friend Jason Fulmer of Memoria, NJ and wife Carrie. He had a big heart and appreciated anything anyone did for him. He will be dearly missed, and I am sure he is at peace and home with our Lord. Bill is survived by his mother Kathleen Smith of Somers Point and father William D. Smith of Coconut Creek, FL, daughter Sarah Ann Smith of Galloway, grandchildren Gianna and Joseph, grandfather William Sinkinson and wife Marita of Richmond, VA, their son William Sinkinson, uncle Michael Sinkinson and wife Cheryl of Torrence, CA, uncle Ron Probst and wife Robin of Quakertown, PA, uncle John Deery, Sr. and wife Jan of Lansdale, PA, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial gathering on Saturday, November 20th 2-3pm at Middleton-Stroble & Zale Funeral Home, 304 Shore Road, Somers Point, NJ 08244. Service and burial will be private.
