Wednesday, February 21, 2018Dear Mort and all of the family: I was just so saddened to see Rita's name in the Little Flower Sequel. Now I know why she hadn't answered me. Rita and I grew up together & attended St. Martins, Little Flower schools and were friends/colleagues as nurses. We reconnected thru working as nurses andactually worked together at Mediplex. We have a place in OC and did got together with Jerry and Rita and my John. Rita also made my daughter's headpiece for her wedding. My husband has alzheimers as did Jerry which was another bond in the more recent years. I did leave a message to Mort on the phone last night (2/20) when I discovered she had passed. I hope she didn't suffer and happy to hear all of her family were present, as you were for Jerry. Mort, you made her very happy and glad she had you to share her last years with - and your family also. She was a good friend, spunky, funny and caring. She was truly blessed with a wonderful family who cared for her - and visa versa. So very sorry for your loss, but know you all have wonderful memoriesthat can't be taken away. Sorry I didn't know or would have been there. Keep her spirit alive and God bless all of you. Hugs, Mary

Monday, January 15, 2018Rita Marie Kauffman December 24, 1938 - December 31, 2017. Rita was born on Christmas Eve 1938 to Rita and George McAdams in Philadelphia. She graduated from Little Flower High School in 1956. On February 15, 1958 she married Philadelphian Gerald J. Kauffman in a blizzard. They moved over the bridge to Pennsauken, NJ and were blessed with five children in six years - Jerry, Greg, Jane, Joanne, and Regina. She was the president of the PTA at St. Cecilia's and an active booster at Bishop Eustace Preparatory High School. She earned her nursing degree from Columbia Presbyterian hospital in New York City in 1984. Over the next 30 years she practiced nursing at Magee Rehabiltation, Mediplex, and Bacharach Institute and retired a few years ago. In 1999, Rita moved with Jerry from their home of 42 years to Sea Isle City. After moving to Somers Point in 2006, she joined the American Special Children's Group and traveled with the children to the shrine at Lourdes in France a half dozen times. She was an Eagles season ticket holder and flew to the Super Bowl in 2005 to root them on. Until he passed in 2007, Rita and Jerry were married for 49 years. Rita joined St. Joseph's as a member of the parish nurse ministry. She liked to travel and went to Ireland 30 times and flew to countries all over the world including Alaska, India, Estonia, Russia, and Scotland. She loved her 13 grandchildren; Sean, Emily, Camille, Eric, Kyle, Ryan, Timothy, Samantha, Bryn, Bryce, Hailey, Bowman, and Olivia. On August 29, 2014 Rita married Mort Bates and they liked to go to Florida together. Rita was a brave woman with a strong faith in God who cared for her 9 brothers and sisters , her aunts Nancy and Bett, and Jack and Mary O'Rourke, Harry and Ann Kauffman, and Sister Ann Virginia. Rita forged her own path in life and this is what we shall remember.
